About the Book
Frenchie: The Story of the French-Speaking Cajuns of World War II is Jason Theriot’s latest work, developed over 20 years of research. The book chronicles the experiences of Cajun soldiers who, despite facing discrimination for speaking French in Louisiana’s English-only school system, played a crucial role as interpreters during World War II. When American forces landed in Normandy in June 1944, these young Cajuns were called upon to bridge the language gap between troops and the local French-speaking populations. Their bilingual abilities proved invaluable in francophone regions of North Africa and Europe. This unique wartime experience rekindled pride in their Cajun heritage, leaving a lasting impact on their cultural identity.
Discussion Topics
The discussion will explore the book’s research, including commentaries from historians, WWII veterans, and locals who can speak on the evolution of French in Louisiana and its future. This is a rare opportunity to engage with experts and gain a deeper understanding of how language and culture intersect with history.
