Fusing documentary and art film genres, this experimental film highlights Youmbi’s conceptual project, Visages
de masques.
As artist and director, Youmbi delves into the creation of his uniquely “hybrid” masks designed to enrich and expand the canon of ritual
societies in West Cameroon and beyond, and traces their movements between the global contemporary art scene and African ceremonial contexts.
The film highlights the multiple relationships and challenges that collaborations entail, and profiles rich accounts from experts in the
visual arts sector.
Youmbi’s film interrogates the impact of colonization on the production of ritual life and masquerading in Africa today, and resists the
clichés and categorizations that confine the reception of signs and meanings from Africa.
Hervé Youmbi, born in 1973 in Bangui, Central African Republic and raised in Douala, Cameroon, is a celebrated contemporary artist deeply influenced by Africa’s complex history. Youmbi’s work explores issues of identity, power, and the legacy of colonialism through portraiture and hybrid masks bridging the gap between traditional African rituals and global contemporary art, questioning what is considered “traditional” or “contemporary.

Events will feature late-night discussions addressing major global issues, plus live music, screenings, performances, and more, all centered this year's theme, “common ground.” Exploring the expression’s literal and metaphorical interpretations, Night of Ideas will prompt participants to consider how we can commit to and protect what we have in common. How can we foster authentic interpersonal connection in an increasingly digital world? In a polarized political landscape, where are our opportunities for dialogue? As extreme weather threatens our planet, how can we preserve the land beneath our feet?Learn more and sign up for updates at nightofideas.org
