This workshop will be offered in English and French. The handouts will be in both languages. Over the course of two hours, we’ll explore our sense of smell through various sensory activities and, at the same time, expand our vocabulary through scents. Among the scents we’ll discover are those of the Louisiana marshes, as well as others from areas bordering the Louisiana coast and the banks of the Mississippi River. Come smell and discover regions and words through scent.

Since birth, our olfactory sense has been vital. As adults, we sometimes tend to forget or neglect it. That's why Manon Bellet  proposes this olfactory workshop. Simply by encouraging participants to focus explicitly on scents and odors. And to make them aware of the smell of the surrounding landscape. To enable us to reconnect with our olfactory sense in our everyday environment. And at the same time, to recognize the importance of the olfactory sense of plants and insects in their environment and for their survival.

The scent workshop is suitable for children, adults, and seniors. Fostering creativity: Describing scents in words enriches the imagination and opens up new channels of expression.  It sparks original discussions and strengthens bonds through an intimate yet shared unique experience.

About Manon Bellet:

In addition to teaching French, Manon Bellet has a background as an artist. About ten years ago, she began a research project titled “Golden Waste,” which was launched in 2017 with the support of Tulane University. This research focuses on extracting scents from areas surrounding New Orleans and extending as far as the Gulf of Mexico. The very idea behind this project is to create an olfactory memory of places in constant flux and for some endangered and, at the same time, to place the local population of these specific areas at the center of the project through their testimonies and their shared knowledge of the riverine areas and their territories.
